In short:

The main aim behind smart transportation networks are quite noble and manifold, including safety, efficiency, enforcement , energy conservation, and emission reduction. Computer vision in transportation came into lime light with the attention from both industry and academia thanks to the recognition of recent mobile transportation platforms and therefore the rapid development of autonomous driving.

Diving Deeper:

There is a worldwide effort to use 21st-century intelligence to evolving our transportation networks. Transport System is comprised of computer vision for a good range of next-generation technology to advanced modern transportation. The goal of the ITS(Intelligent Transport System) is to improve the safety and efficiency of transportation with reducing environmental impacts. ITS aim to form roads less congested prevents fatal accidents, enhance mobility, reduce pollution, and improve the efficiency of economic transport.

Computer vision plays a vital role in all of this by gathering real-time information about traffic conditions. These machine vision systems, once the future of the international transport system is fully realized, will either be embedded within vehicles or from cameras mounted near roadways for highly accurate traffic information.

Vision technology are going to be a central component within the evolution of ITS. The first priority of the ITS JPO(Joint Program Office) is to understand connected vehicle implementation, where vehicles feature variety of sensors and connectivity to enable vehicle-to-vehicle communication. The second priority is to advance automation technologies as they arise — primarily all technologies, including embedded vision systems, that increase levels of autonomy in commercial and passenger vehicles.

· Self-driving vehicles: Embracing autonomous trucks and taxis reduce cost and delay in transportation

· Traffic Management: Computer vision can’t only reduce unwanted traffic jam but also improve road safety and reduce wait times.

· Delay Prediction: Leveraging data lake technique and computer vision, transportation companies offers exceptional service to passengers in lowering passengers wait times and enhancing their journey experience.

· Drone Taxis: Pilot-less helicopter present a singular and complicated solution t combat the carbon emission, eliminate traffic jam , and reduce the necessity for expensive infrastructure planning and building

Looking even further to the longer term of ITS, the top goal is to possess a totally connected system of passenger and commercial vehicles, also as stationary points of knowledge collection, forming one complete system that communicates all relevant information for optimized traffic flow, safety, and environmental responsibility.
